Stroke Prevention

If you have experienced a stroke, it is common for you to concentrate your efforts on recovery, however, focusing on stroke prevention is just as, if not more, crucial.  Of the estimated 3 of a million Americans who experience a stroke every year, up to 14% will experience a second within one year.  24% of women and 42% of men who have had one stroke will have another within five years.  Fortunately, the prevention of stroke is possible, and it can be done in several ways. In fact, according to the National Stroke Association, "80% of all strokes are preventable". Always talk to your doctor about which one is right for you.

The first method of stroke prevention is medication.  Blood pressure is considered to be the most important manageable stroke risk factor, and medication can help control that, as well as high cholesterol and heart disease.  Aspirin is the most common anti-clot medication used, and on the market.

The second is surgery. Blocked arteries can be restored, freeing the flow of blood to your brain, greatly increasing your chances of stroke prevention.  Several other surgical procedures are also being developed, and depending on your situation, may be right for you.

As mentioned, blood pressure is essential in stroke prevention. As such, monitoring blood pressure is essential.  Blood pressure can be controlled through diet, exercise, and again, medication.

The key to lowering your risk and increasing your stroke prevention is really more simple than you think – just follow your doctors advice about diet, exercise, medication and weight loss.  Your doctor knows your medical history, your current condition and lifestyle.  Your doctor is your best resource for stroke prevention, so take his/her advice to heart, stay healthy, and stay stroke-free.
